Hauraki Rail Trail

A grant from the Honda Tree Fund is supporting further planting along the Hauraki Rail Trail. During 2014 there were two major areas of planting. One is just downstream of the Waihi swingbridge and weir, while the second is closer to Waikino. Both include large trees donated by Newmont Waihi Gold plus HELP plants. During 2015 these plantings were extended.

As well the Lilian Valder Ohinemuri Trust has granted funds for privet clearance. This is being used just upstream from the Waikino Station bridge and the area will be replanted using the NWG and Honda plants.

HELP worked with the HRT Trust to secure a grant from the Waikato DOC Fund. This has been used to clear the section of the trail between Kaimanawa and Robinson Roads near Hikutaia. The area is thick with privet, wattle and nightshade. Now that it is cleared, planting of the area in natives will be carried out in conjunction with Hikutaia School. Our thanks also to the neighbouring farmer Brad van Hellmond.
HELP is also working with HRT Trust to raise funds to extend the area of weed removal. Two areas are being targeted. One is north of the Kaimanawa Road area, while the other is near Tirohia. Some funding has been secured thanks to the Waikato Regional Council EIF grants and further funding is being sought. If everything goes to plan there will be major planting activity in 2017.
