Japanese Walnut removal
Seed trees in the tributaries of the Ohinemuri have been providing robust reed into the river system for some years. HELP was granted an EIF grant by WRC to work on the area upstream of Queens Head. Work has started drilling plants in the Walmsley Stream area, and an arborist was used to remove two large trees from the roadside in the area (thanks to support from HDC). It is intended that the drilling/dropping programme will continue through 2016 into 2017. One particular area of infestation, alongside the Rail Trail below the Waihi weir, will be replanted with natives as a restoration project in 2017.
